Wargrave Village Festival

22 June 2013

A-000161

As part of the Wargrave Village Festival, the Wargrave Local History Society arranged a Historic Wargrave Exhibition in the Woodclyffe Hall. Taking the Festival theme of 'Carry on', the displays included Carry on... St Mary's (on the church), Carry on ... Teacher (on the village schools), Carry on ... Sergeant (on the village in wartime), Carry on ... up the pub, Carry on ... Meandering down the River, Carry on ... Shopping etc. With well over 250 photographs to view, along with old documents, maps, books of newspaper cuttings and items relating to village history, there was a lot for visitors to see. Many of the items on display had not been shown in the village before. The reaction from visitors to the exhibition was that it was very much enjoyed, and many stayed for some hours studying the pictures, documents and newspaper cuttings. Amongst comments made was that it was 'the best local history exhibition they had seen' and 'it looked as if the exhibition had been a labour of love'. The only critical comment was that visitors wished it had been open for longer! Around 200 people came to see the displays during the day. The following day, two groups were conducted on a Historic Wargrave Walk, taking in the church, Mill Green and High Street. Participants learnt of the history of many village buildings, their residents, the businesses that carried on there, and many of the incidents that had happened over the centuries of Wargrave's history.
